Design News: Sports Pictograms for Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

Design for big world-scale events is always a theme of hot discussions, fresh trends, and bright inspiration. Here’s the news of that kind: Tokyo 2020 has unveiled the official sports pictograms created for the Olympic Games. They were designed by Japanese designer Masaaki Hiromura to transfer the originality, dynamics, and spirit of each kind of sport presented.

The pictograms will be broadly used for various goals such as signs at the venues of athletic competitions, decorations around the city, licensed products and souvenirs, posters, tickets, guidebooks and so on. This way the visual consistency of the event design will be achieved. The graphics were designed to follow Tokyo 2020’s theme “Innovation from Harmony” and drawing inspiration was claimed to be obtained from the Olympic Games Tokyo 1964 when pictograms were first introduced at the Olympics.

The team of designers led by Hiromura worked on the project for about two years. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games programme features 33 sports some of which have more that one pictogram, so the creative outcome made up 50 designs.
